Why multiple flashes?
Using more than one flash allows you to shape light with precision: fill in shadows, highlight details, and create dramatic atmospheres. Essential for bird photography in complex habitats or with strong backlighting.
Positioning layout
Place a main flash (key) at 45° to the subject, a fill flash on the other side with less power, and a rim light behind to separate from the background. Adjust each in TTL or manual to balance the scene.
Camera and Flash Settings
- Manual mode: 1/200s – 1/250s, ƒ/5.6 – ƒ/8, ISO 200–400.
- Key flash power: 1/2–1/4; fill flash: 1/8–1/16.
- High-Speed Sync (HSS) for bright backgrounds.
- Modifiers: small softbox for fill, grid on rim flash.
Advanced Tips
- Test and adjust: take several shots with different power settings to balance natural and artificial light.
- Color control: use CTO/CTB gels to harmonize the flashes with the ambient light.
- Distance to subject: the closer the flash, the more light fall-off you'll have; move to vary the contrast.
- Reliable radio trigger: choose transmitters with good coverage and precise synchronization.
